What exercise is extremely user friendly, doesn’t cost a nickel, can be performed anywhere at any time of day and is one of the most natural things you will ever do? The answer is walking, of course. Going for a walk everyday can improve your moods, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, help control or prevent diabetes, burn calories and perhaps protect against cancer. Now I am not talking about window shop walking, I’m talking about walking like you are in the Atlanta airport and you are trying to make your connection to your next flight. Get the lead out and walk like you mean it; you should be able to feel your heart rate rise. Of course one person’s brisk walk may be another ones stroll but the point is that you should perceive your exertion to be challenging. You should feel a little breathless when you talk, that is the walking I am talking about.

If genetics predisposes us to certain diseases, then I am in big trouble when it comes to type 2 diabetes. It is extremely rampant in my family, especially as we age.  Research does show a big correlation between genetics and diabetes, so let’s just say I am watching it like a hawk. Does that mean I am home free? Not necessarily, but at least I will have a better chance of avoiding the disease if I practice preventive measures. Practicing preventive medicine is always the best scenario.

Okay, I have been tired before and certainly have been exhausted at the end of a long active day but getting out of bed in the morning wondering when there would be time to sneak a power nap, was definitely something new for me. After blaming it on hormones (or lack of hormones) I finally went to my physician to get my annual physical. When he asked how I felt, my reply was great. I am very busy with my business, exercising every day, not to mention mom stuff and house stuff but mentioned to him about the extreme tiredness and foggy brain feeling. I am sure it is just my hormones gone wild I said, but he was adamant about some blood tests. Well long story short, I got a phone call two days later. It was Dr. Morin who said “get down to my office tomorrow, your B12 levels are extremely low and we need to get you on B12 shots once a week for four weeks.” Admittedly, I was kind of glad there was a good reason for the tiredness and fog.

When most people take a vacation they take a vacation from everything including their exercise program. Granted if your vacation is a short one, you might not have time to get in much exercise but there is always time for a little activity if you plan ahead. I always call ahead to our destination to see about fitness facilities, hiking courses or biking trails. My idea of a great vacation is quality time with my family, workouts (without rushing), leisure time for reading, sightseeing and lots of good food.
