Counting my blessings

Friday, January 6th, 2012

You might have heard by now that I had a bad fall while running on the trails with my husband. The leaves had just fallen and covered the trail, my right foot caught under a small root and the next thing I knew I was on the ground with my left arm stretched out over my head. I knew I was hurt pretty bad in my left shoulder, but thought I had just pulled a muscle. I kept saying to my husband, Mike “just give me a minute, I will be fine and can finish the run.”

Walk like you mean it for best health benefits

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

What exercise is extremely user friendly, doesn’t cost a nickel, can be performed anywhere at any time of day and is one of the most natural things you will ever do? The answer is walking, of course. Going for a walk everyday can improve your moods, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, help control or prevent diabetes, burn calories and perhaps protect against cancer. Now I am not talking about window shop walking, I’m talking about walking like you are in the Atlanta airport and you are trying to make your connection to your next flight. Get the lead out and walk like you mean it; you should be able to feel your heart rate rise. Of course one person’s brisk walk may be another ones stroll but the point is that you should perceive your exertion to be challenging. You should feel a little breathless when you talk, that is the walking I am talking about.

Five things I learned from running a half marathon

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

My husband and I just got back from running the Music City half marathon in Nashville Tennessee on April 30. We are saying that we ran a marathon because he ran 13.1 miles and I ran 13.1 miles so between the two of us we did run a marathon. That’s our story and we are sticking to it.

Hike for your heart

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

It was a beautiful sunny day with the temperature hitting 77 degrees, which felt like a heat wave compared to our recent rainy weather. Mike and I were tasked with measuring the distance for an upcoming special event in Bristol, Tenn. We used a surveyor’s measuring wheel to accurately measure the distance required for the course. At first, my husband drove a Kubota and I put the wheel out the side to measure the distance. Then it occurred to me that, of all people, I should be walking the distance. Practice what you preach, Linda. So we parked the Kubota and set out on foot. The scenery was so beautiful we forgot that it was exercise. It was wonderful to be outside soaking up some Vitamin D from the sun.

Many reasons of why I like to run

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

I just walked in my house from a nice run outside. Today I chose to run some intervals in the cul-de-sac at the bottom of my driveway. Intervals, in case you don’t know, are bouts of fast paced running or walking with intermittent rest intervals or intervals at a slower pace. I am not sure why I chose to do intervals today, because they are not pleasant, but they do however burn a lot of calories. The weather was enticing, a beautiful sunny day, and perfect weather conditions for a nice workout outside.

Take your whole family hiking or biking

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

My children used to make fun of me because I always suggested that we do the same thing every Mother’s Day.

My wish was for the whole family to load up in the car and head to the Virginia Creeper Trail for an all-day bike ride or fitness hike. After we had exhausted ourselves, we would go eat at our favorite restaurant.

That worked well for many years, but now it is very hard to get the whole family together at one time. Thankfully, we have great memories of our family hikes. We always had a great time even though sometimes they complained the whole way. But afterwards, we had wonderful memories to talk about, and we were all glad we went.

I loved hearing the words “Mom, you were right, this was a great idea.” (more…)
