You might have heard by now that I had a bad fall while running on the trails with my husband. The leaves had just fallen and covered the trail, my right foot caught under a small root and the next thing I knew I was on the ground with my left arm stretched out over my head. I knew I was hurt pretty bad in my left shoulder, but thought I had just pulled a muscle. I kept saying to my husband, Mike “just give me a minute, I will be fine and can finish the run.”

Counting my blessings
Friday, January 6th, 2012Green tea is full of promise for a healthy lifestyle
Sunday, December 4th, 2011I am not a coffee drinker, love to smell it and hold a cup in my hands, but just cannot develop a taste for it. I have tried on several occasions to drink coffee but for the life of me just cannot savor the flavor.
Now that does not necessarily include the mochas and lattes. I probably could like them a lot, but the calorie and sugar content is high in most of those. It’s better to choose flavored coffees in moderation and avoid developing your taste buds for those. On the other
hand, tea is one of my favorite drinks. I love tea, all kinds, steaming hot with lots of flavor. As I tell my clients most teas are full of wonderful natural
Women have discovered value of weight training
Wednesday, September 28th, 2011Ten years ago weight rooms across the U.S. were mainly occupied by men. Women did not dare go in that sweaty testosterone-filled room. Why, because we were self-conscious, lacked knowledge about how to use equipment and felt out of place. Well, today is a different story. I would say most weight rooms are occupied by men and women equally. Women now realize that weight training is very important for them to prevent loss of muscle, weight gain and more importantly bone loss.
Poor posture can cause a multitude of issues
Thursday, September 15th, 2011Stand tall, squeeze a pencil between your shoulder blades and tighten your abdominals and buttock. All cues for us to remember to achieve good posture. As I mentioned last week, poor posture can lead to cartilage damage, disc injury, neurological damage, arthritis and muscle imbalances.
Fitness professionals in heaven during Atlanta Mania
Wednesday, August 31st, 2011BRISTOl, Va. - I just returned from a trip to Atlanta where I attended Atlanta Mania 2011, a four-day wellness convention. Needless to say my days were very full and my brain was on overload for most of the time. I did indeed hear some great presenters and learn current wellness information. I always feel right at home at these conventions because it is like being with 500 people just like me.
Breakfast: Is it really the most important meal of the day?
Monday, August 29th, 2011BRISTOl, Va. –If your mornings are like mine, hurried, haphazard, and harried, then you might be tempted to skip breakfast and grab a cup of coffee as you run out the door. When my children were little our mornings were quite interesting, they would be glad to tell you that I am not a morning person, therefore chipper is not in my morning vocabulary, so it was definitely hard to pull off a good breakfast and a good attitude. Fixing breakfast the night before or at least getting it set out seemed to help. I was adamant that we all have breakfast before school because of its importance to our health. You see breakfast is like breaking a fast, your body has been without food for a long period of time while you were sleeping so it needs fuel to begin the day. Your brain needs fuel to function properly as well as all your other organs. Just as your car needs fuel to run, so does your body, food is that fuel. The healthier the food the more efficient the body will run. Breakfast is also like putting a log on a fire that is about to go out, it will burn brighter and longer with that log added, same thing with our metabolism. If you want to jump start your metabolism for the day then start with breakfast.
Are extreme workouts too extreme?
Thursday, August 18th, 2011I just all love the infomercials that promote workout DVDs or workout equipment. What is so interesting to me is that they all claim they have the very best workout to help you look like a supermodel in just a few weeks. It also cracks me up that the people doing the exercises are super fit and are usually never sweating, not to mention they have a big smile on their faces while working out. As you know by now I am all about a great intense, safe workout that burns a lot of calories, which means you will sweat a bit.
Does anything remain the same with exercise?
Monday, August 15th, 2011I was complaining to my husband the other day about my cell phone. Do you remember when a cell phone was a phone and a laptop was a computer and never shall the two meet? Now cell phones are hardly phones at all, they are small computers with many bells and whistles. Technology is changing at a lightening pace, to keep up means being about accepting the changes and move forward.
